According to the Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names with an Essay on their Derivation and Import, published in New York in 1857, the name Watson means “son of Walter,” which means “wood master” or “keeper of the wood.” Watson is primarily a surname, though in the 1800s it was a first name as well. In 1880 in the U.S. 38 per cent of people named Watson were farmers.
